SUNDAY, MAY 18 IS HERITAGE SUNDAY AT AQUIA CHURCH: Our historic church building is a National Trust Historic Site (note the plaque on the wrought iron fence), so it is most fitting that we will be observing our heritage during National Preservation month. The 9am and 11:15am services will be from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The colonial Communion silver will be on the Altar. All are invited to come dressed in colonial period apparel. And we welcome the Peyton Society of Virginia. A hearty luncheon will be served by the ECW (Episcopal Church Women) after the 11:15 service. There is no charge for the luncheon. We hope that the entire Parish family will join us as we enjoy this celebration of our heritage.
OUTREACH FOR THE WOUNDED: During the month of May the Outreach Ministry is asking for items for men and women wounded in action who are being treated at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Although their basic and medical needs are met, often small comforts and extras are lacking. Being far from family and home, simple things like phone cards and disposable cameras can mean a lot. T-shirts with service logos, breakaway pants that slip over casts easily, weight-lifting gloves for those who spend hours in a wheelchair are also on the list of items being collected. Look at the complete list of items needed on the picnic table. If you would prefer an Outreach Ministry member to do your shopping, simply write a check to Aquia Church and indicate on the memo line “Wounded Warrior Outreach”. Items can be placed in the basket on the picnic table each Sunday in May. They will be blessed at the Altar on May 25 and delivered shortly thereafter.
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR VBS: 1) We need empty Kraft blue flip top plastic mayo jars (they look similar to a canteen) for VBS. We need 75 for a craft project; we currently have 26. 2) Cardboard paper toilet tubes. We need 75. For more information, please see Lascetta Patton or Patty Montgomery.
PARISH-WIDE MISSION TRIP: Each summer Aquia Church sends out a team of parishioners on a parish-wide mission trip organized and led by the EYC youth group, so that we may help spread the name of Jesus Christ to others in the world. For 2008, we will go to the impoverished region of Smithers, West Virginia. Our team will work in a variety of ways to rebuild residential areas and make major home improvements for those who are less fortunate and who cannot complete such work on their own because of financial hardship, physical disability, or mental limitations. Mission trip participants can accomplish much for those in need, with different kinds of labor available and an array of skills needed. Participants in this mission trip must be rising ninth graders or older, there is room for adults and teenagers alike, and we have a particular need for adult males to join in this work. This mission trip will depart from Stafford on the morning of Sunday, June 29, and return on Saturday, July 5. Each participant’s cost toward this mission trip will be $250, and there are full and partial scholarships available for active parishioners. For more information about the trip and scholarships, please contact the Rev. Jay Morris.
PARABLES BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES: Our new Bible study series on the parables of Jesus continues to meet on Wednesday mornings (starting at 10:30am in the Wirman Room) and on Thursday evenings (with meal offered at 6:30pm and presentation starting around 7pm, both downstairs in the parish hall). Even if you did not order a workbook, you are welcome to join in the discussion and fellowship.
SCREWTAPE LETTERS: There is a live-theatre production of C.S. Lewis’s book The Screwtape Letters currently playing in Washington, D.C., through May 18. Whether or not you have read this work before, you might well be interested in the exchange between the characters Screwtape and Toadpipe (a senior devil and his secretary) as they lead a new apprentice named Wormwood in attacking Christianity; this work provides an intriguing twist on living the Christian life. For more information about schedules and purchasing tickets, please visit the Website www.fpatheatre.com Perhaps parishioners could attend in groups and enjoy the performance together.
ATTENTION FUTURE 6TH GRADERS: Are you graduating from the 5th grade? Upcoming 6th graders are cordially invited to the final two EYC meetings of the year. Please join us in the Parish Hall on Sunday, May 18 and Sunday, June 1 from 5 - 7pm. Dinner is provided. Contact Mrs. Long for any questions at lbcclong@comcast.net or the call office (540.659.4007) for her phone number.
